Social Parenthood and Public Order Limits

The PRIN 2022 research project “Social Parenthood: Analysis of the Phenomenon and the Public Order Limits” will conclude with its Final Conference, to be held on 20 February 2026 at the Department of Law of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The event will bring together scholars from several Italian universities to discuss the legal, constitutional and bioethical implications of social parenthood, with particular attention to the evolving boundaries set by public order and the protection of fundamental rights.
Morning Session (10:00 – 13:00)
Chaired by Antonio D’Aloia (University of Parma), the morning panel will address key issues concerning filiation, medically assisted procreation, and the role of the legislature and the judiciary in shaping contemporary parenthood models.

- Maria Pia Iadicicco (University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”)
- Matteo Caldironi (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia)
Topics will range from the judge’s subjection to the law and the recognition of status filiationis, to constitutional interests involved in parenthood projects more than twenty years after Law no. 40/2004, as well as the challenges posed by normative obsolescence and legislative omissions in the field of medically assisted procreation.
A lunch break will follow.
Afternoon Session (15:00 – 18:00)
The afternoon session, chaired by Valentina Piccinini (University of Milan-Bicocca), will focus on rights and duties of the social parent, same-sex parenthood, the best interests of the child, adoption in special cases, and the management of reproductive contingencies.

Scheduled Interventions
Dedicated slots (12:00–13:00 and 17:00–18:00) will be reserved for scheduled interventions by members of the research group and early-career scholars.
